Prashna Upanishad

The Prashna Upanishad, or the “Question Upanishad,” is a foundational text of Vedantic philosophy. It records the sage Pippalada’s answers to six profound questions posed by his disciples. The discourse begins with the origin of creation, exploring the duality of prana (life force) and rayi (matter). It delves into the nature of the vital breath and the ultimate reality of the Supreme Self, or Brahman. The text is a profound inquiry into the mysteries of existence, providing a roadmap for spiritual seekers.

The six questions posed to the sage Pippalada are:

  1. Origin of Creation: Where do all living beings come from?
  2. Nature of a Living Being: What are the powers that support a living being, and which is the supreme among them?
  3. Nature of Prana: What is the origin of life breath (prana), and how does it enter, stay in, and leave the body?
  4. Consciousness in Sleep: What is it that sleeps, what is awake, and who experiences dreams?
  5. Meditation on Om: What happens to the person who meditates on the syllable Om until death?
  6. The Supreme Self: What is the ultimate person of sixteen parts and where does he dwell?
