Swami Paramananda

Swami Paramananda, a mystic, poet, and the youngest direct disciple of Swami Vivekananda, was a pioneering teacher of Vedanta in the United States. Arriving in 1906, he established the Vedanta Centre of Boston and later the Ananda Ashrama in California. A notable aspect of his work was his strong belief in spiritual equality, establishing disciplined communities where women held leadership roles. He made significant literary contributions, most famously his translation of “The Upanishads.” This accessible work, including texts like the Isa, Katha, and Kena Upanishads, and his “Message of the East” periodical, created a bridge of understanding between Eastern spirituality and Western life, emphasizing love, harmony, and self-realization.
